USCIS Offers New E-Verify Tool

Written By The Shapiro Law Group on February 06, 2013

Just recently, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (the “USCIS”) launched its new E-Verify search tool, which enables users to determine whether employers are enrolled in the E-Verify system. The E-Verify system helps employers to determine whether prospective or current employees are legally authorized to work in the U.S. by data-banking all federal citizenship and work authorization records.

This new E-Verify search tool will help a variety of foreign-born job seekers, such as certain higher education students in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines (“STEM students”) who want to apply for Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM students only. Such students, by law, can be legally employed only by employers enrolled in E-Verify.

The new tool allows users to sort search results according to a number of factors, including:

  • An employer’s business name;
  • An employer’s status as a federal contractor;
  • The size of an employer’s workforce; and
  • A complying employer’s location.

This tool will be much less cumbersome than employer-by-employer scanning of the old E-Verify employer list, and the tool can be accessed via link to the USCIS Web-page for the E-Verify Search Tool. The foregoing page also contains links to a User’s Guide and FAQs.
