Undocumented Immigrants Will Soon Qualify for Illinois Driver’s Licenses

Written By The Shapiro Law Group on January 25, 2013

Undocumented immigrants in Illinois who have not yet pursued the grant of “deferred action” status, which temporarily suspends enforcement and deportation actions against certain qualified individuals who were brought to the U.S. as children, now have another reason to step forward so that they can work here legally.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has pledged his support for a legislative measure that passed the state’s house and senate, which will grant undocumented immigrants the right to get temporary driver’s licenses.

Of course, those who wish to obtain licenses will have to pass road tests, just like other drivers, and will have to insure their vehicles, which is expected to make the roads safer for everybody.

There will be some data kept on driver’s license applicants, and there will likely be some minimal screening to insure that licenses are not issued to dangerous individuals, but those applicants who have obtained “deferred action” status can rest assured that obtaining a driver’s license will not in any way interfere with their legal rights stay in the U.S.

If you are interested in pursuing the grant of “deferred action” status, or if you have questions about any other immigration matter, do not hesitate to call our office at (847)564-0712 to speak with a qualified and experienced lawyer.
