The Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) has announced an expanded capability for the E-Verify system, empowering employers to instantly verify the validity and authenticity of U.S. passports and passport cards.
According to DHS, roughly 10 percent of all employees subject to E-Verify use their passports for I-9 identification purposes.
This new electronic validation capability is expected to greatly strengthen the ability of employers to identify fraudulent immigration identification documents, and consequently, to eliminate or reduce some of the legal risk to employers from hiring immigrants.
It is part of a continuing effort by DHS to use technology for rapid storage and retrieval of information relating to immigrants, much of which employers must rely upon to avoid strict penalties for illegal hiring.
