Many people seeking to obtain legal entry or residence within the U.S. have fallen prey to “notarios” and immigration “consultants” who have no license to practice law and insufficient knowledge of the legal system to provide accurate and reliable assistance.
In some cases, victims have paid money for unqualified assistance, only to discover later that their efforts were not only ineffective, but harmful to their legal goals.
The American Immigration Lawyers Association (“AILA”) now offers to residents of every state a free guide to finding qualified legal assistance and to filing complaints against unlawful notarios and consultants.
If you have been harmed, you can also contact the Consumer Fraud Bureau of the office of the Illinois Attorney General (insert weblink) at (312) 814-3000 or (800) 386-5438.
AILA also offers a toll free hotline for finding qualified immigration attorneys at 1-800-954-0254.
